The Sydney-based Institute for Economics and Peace has released its 2020 Global Peace Index report which ranks 163 independent countries according to their level of peacefulness.
So where does Greece and its neighbours rank among the 163 countries listed and what category do they fall into for the "State of Peace" metric?
This year Greece moved up by 8 places and was at 57th position, ranked with a "High" level of peace.
The report said that Greece's increase in the ranking was "primarily driven by a better score on the political terror scale and a stronger commitment to UN peacekeeping funding."
Greece has an average of 26 protests, riots or strikes each year, however, civil unrest as a whole declined 23% from 2011 to 2018 as the country started to recover from the Global Financial Crisis, the report said.
Bulgaria moved down two places to 28th position, Italy was at 31st position and Albania was in 55th position - all three were categorised with a "High" State of Peace like Greece.
North Macedonia was ranked at 62nd position and was categorised with a "Medium" ranking for State of Peace.
Out of 163 countries, Turkey was ranked 150 and was categorised as "Very Low" for State of Peace, alongside countries like Libya, Somalia, Syria and Afghanistan.
The report said that "Europe remains the world’s most peaceful region" but that "Turkey is the only European country to be ranked in the bottom 25 least peaceful countries."
Major reasons for Turkey's extremely low rankings was its refusal to stop illegal immigrants from entering Greece, the suppression of domestic political dissent to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and an 8.3% increase to the incarceration rate.
Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held onto since 2008. It is joined at the top of the index by New Zealand, Austria, Portugal and Denmark.
For the second year in a row, Afghanistan was ranked as the least peaceful country in the world, followed by Syria, Iraq, South Sudan and Yemen. With the exception of Yemen, all the bottom countries have been the least peaceful countries since at least 2015.
