Greek government extends lockdown at migrant camps

Following a joint decision by the Migration, Health and Citizens’ Protection ministries, Greece announced an extension of its COVID-19 lockdown measures in the country’s migrant reception centres.

It has been extended through to July 19.

The movement restrictions on the migrant camps was first imposed at the peak of the pandemic in March, but have been repeatedly extended by authorities who fear an outbreak of Covid-19, particularly on the Aegean islands where facilities are overcrowded.

The regulations, which restrict camp residents from leaving the facilities between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., apply to all reception camps nationwide, the Migration Ministry said.

Moria camp in Lesvos currently houses 19,000 people, almost seven times its capacity of 2,800 places.
