A second wave? Sypsas shows concern for coronavirus in Athens and Thessaloniki

Professor of Infectious Diseases, Nikos Sypsas, expressed great concern about coronavirus cases in Athens and Thessaloniki, emphasising that there is a spread in the community.

"It seems that we are in total control of the situation regarding the imported cases. However, there is great concern about the cases in Athens and Thessaloniki, which means that we have a spread of the virus in the community," Sypsas told MEGA.

Commenting on the congestion, Sypsas pointed out that one person can transmit it to 100 people.

At the same time, he mentioned that the "shield" that has been used very often lately works in addition to the mask, which offers greater security and is more effective. The worst case scenario, according to Sypsas, is a second wave in the summer.

The professor of Infectious Diseases estimates that such a thing will not happen, because as a country Greece is doing very well so far in the treatment of the coronavirus.

For the elderly, he reminded that they are affected by irresponsible behaviours of young people. The good news, he said, is that vulnerable groups and the elderly are being protected.

"Take care, stay away, keep your distance," was his message.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilias, speaking on SKAI said that vaccinations will be done hierarchical "for those who need to be protected."

"Who are they: they are our elderly citizens, the vulnerable groups, the ones who meet the conditions first of all to be vaccinated," he stated.

At the same time, he stated that there is no question of the adequacy of the vaccines, nor is there any obligation, but it is strongly recommended.

Regarding the measures that the state will take, especially for vulnerable groups, in case there is a second wave of the coronavirus, the minister stressed the following: "We will study how we will be able to protect the vulnerable groups. If we have to give permission to those who have underlying diseases and work in the private or public sector, yes we will. We will protect those who are in danger."
