Coronavirus threat still looms over Greece, says PM

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis posted a message on Twitter, urging citizens to observe preventive measures against the novel coronavirus.

Accompanied by a video containing relevant facts, the tweet reads: "Together we successfully faced the first wave of Covid-19, but the danger did not go away, and we must not forget this now in the summer. As we have been listening to the experts all this time, we are now still observing health safety measures, especially when we are gradually opening Greece to visitors."

Greece reported 35 new coronavirus cases in the latest 24-hour reporting period, of which 9 are from incoming travellers.

In more detail:

  • 4 were identified after checks at the country’s entrance gates
  • 5 other important cases (who voluntarily got tested)
  • 17 cases in Attica
  • 2 case in Thessaloniki
  • 2 cases in Achaia
  • 2 cases in Kavala
  • 1 case in Halkidiki
  • 1 case in Viotia

This raises the total number of cases to 4,227.

1,184 are considered to be related to travel from abroad and 2,118 are related to an already known case.

Meanwhile, 9 patients are in ICU. Their average age is 58 years. 77.8% have an underlying disease or are over 70 years old.

The country’s pandemic death toll remains at 202.

It is recalled, Professor of Infectious Diseases, Nikos Sypsas stated: “It seems that we are in total control of the situation regarding the imported cases. However, there is great concern about the cases in Athens and Thessaloniki, which means that we have a spread of the virus in the community,” Sypsas told MEGA.

Commenting on the congestion, Sypsas pointed out that one person can transmit it to 100 people.
