Nick Kyrgios announced he won’t be playing in this year’s US Open, saying he is making his decision for “my Aussies”, and for the people who have lost their lives in the covid-19 pandemic.

The tournament which will be held in Flushing Meadows, Queens is scheduled to start on August 31.

However, it will be played without fans to limit the risk of spreading of the virus.

Kyrgios posted a video on Sunday, where he read from a statement. “I will not be playing this year at the US Open,” he said.

“It hurts me at my core not to be out there, competing in one of the sport’s greatest arenas, Arthur Ashe Stadium.”

“But I’m sitting out for the people, my Aussies, for the hundreds and thousands of American people who have lost their lives. For all of you. It’s my decision,” he added.

Earlier this year, Kyrgios showed a big heart and took to the streets of Canberra, to deliver food to anyone going hungry during the pandemic.

This is not the first time this year that the 25-year old has stepped up in a crisis and his charitable efforts have to be commended. During the Australian summer of tennis, he pledged to donate $200 for every ace he hit and it was his idea of the ‘Rally for Relief’ that helped raise millions of dollars for those impacted by the devastating bushfires.
