Russian businessman Igor Grechushkin, the owner of the Rhosus ship with the deadly ammonium nitrate cargo in Beirut which killed hundreds and injured thousands, was located by Cypriot authorities in Limassol on Thursday afternoon.
The Russian father of one, currently reported to be living in Limassol, Cyprus, was located at the request of Interpol.
According to a report by Al Jazzera, the ammonium nitrate reserves arrived in Lebanon in September 2013, on a cargo ship called 'Rhosus'. It was forced to anchor in Beirut after encountering technical problems at sea, according to lawyers representing the boat's crew.
However, Lebanese officials prevented the boat from sailing as it was ‘lacking documents and conditions necessary for transportation' and it was abandoned by its owners and crew.
On Thursday, Lebanese authorities also detained 16 individuals as part of an investigation into the Beirut port warehouse explosion that shook the capital city.
One Greek woman, Anna Armaou, a Greek national living in Beirut, lost her eye in the deadly explosion and shared her account of the incident.
“I was home, I live on the fourth floor. There was nothing left, everything was destroyed. They took me to three hospitals and there was no place to put me,” the injured Greek woman told SKAI.
“Blood was running from my face and eyes, people were running like crazy on the street,” she continued.
Anna was lucky compared to some. It was confirmed late Tuesday by the Greek Embassy in Lebanon that a Greek citizen died in the explosion that rocked the capital. Five other Greeks were also injured.
