Number of imported coronavirus cases remains low, says Greek Tourism Minister

"The number of imported cases remains low," Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis told the Regional Tourism Council via video conference.

He stressed the effectiveness of preventive measures at Greece’s entry points and the need for constant vigilance.

"We must not be complacent. It is important that cases are identified in a timely manner and this shows that the measures are working. We must not forget, however, that the number of imported cases remains low. Most of them are domestic, as the Prime Minister stated earlier," Theoharis said.

The Minister also noted during an interview with Skai TV on Thursday, that only 400 covid-19 cases had been recorded from the 1.3 million tourists that entered the country during the month of July.

“July was a trial month for Greek tourism. We closed with 15% to 20% of the corresponding tourist traffic last year. I’m sure August will be better than July" he added.

Referring to the permitted occupancy on the different modes of transport and the procedures applied, Theocharis stated that “the situation with occupancy is dynamic and is reviewed at regular intervals. The same goes for the health protocols, which we adjust according to the developments."

As of July 1, Greece opened to tourism following the relaxation of coronavirus-related restrictions.

All passengers arriving in Greece must fill in a Passenger Locator Form (PLF) at least a day before arrival, providing information that will include their departure airport, the address where they will be staying and the expected duration of their stay in Greece, among others. The information on the form is a key element of the country’s planning for protection against the pandemic and preventing the spread of the virus.
