Turkey cancels meeting with Greece following EEZ deal with Egypt

Things are moving rapidly geopolitically on the Greek-Turkish front after an agreement was reached between Greece and Egypt on their respective Exclusive Economic Zones.

According to information from OPEN TV, Ankara informed Athens that for its part, the exploratory contacts that were to start on August 24 are being cancelled for the time being.

According to the report, this initiative is from the Turkish side and in fact seems to be Ankara's angry reaction to the agreement reached between Greece and Egypt on the Exclusive Economic Zone and the delimitation of the continental shelf.

The announcement of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the Greek agreement with Egypt is "non-existent."

"There is no sea border between Greece and Egypt. For Turkey, the so-called agreement on the definition of maritime areas, which was announced to have been signed today [yesterday], is non-existent . Let our point of view be known both on the front and on the table," the Turkish announcement said.

"The alleged area of ​​responsibility is located within a Turkish continental shelf that has been declared to the United Nations. Egypt evacuated an area of ​​11,500 square meters kilometers with the agreement and signed with the Greek Cypriot Administration in 2003. Now with the so-called agreement it signed with Greece, it loses maritime areas of responsibility. With this agreement, an attempt is being made to usurp the rights of Libya," the Turkish statement concluded.

In a tweet made on Thursday afternoon, the representative of the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Hafez, announced that Greece and Egypt signed an agreement to delimit maritime zones, to establish their own EEZ.

The agreement on the EEZ was signed by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, who hastily went to Cairo to meet his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry.

The representative of the Egyptian Foreign Minister posted on Twitter: “Part of the signing ceremony of an agreement for the establishment of an exclusive economic zone between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Republic of Greece.”
