Greece sends medical, humanitarian aid to Beirut

Greek Navy's gunship 'IKARIA' is sailing for the port of Beirut carrying armed forces' medical and nursing staff, medicines and material collected by the Civil Protection and Crises Management Deputy Ministry.

The fatal blast in Beirut on the 4th August left at least 158 people dead, 6,000 injured and 300,000 homeless.

According to the National Defence General Staff and following Cyprus' request, the Greek gunship will load material from the port of Limassol, a Cyprus' offer to the government of Lebanon.

The announcement said that specific instructions and protocols for all the passengers will be followed against the spread of COVID-19 during the vessel's stay at the port of Beirut.

One Greek woman, Anna Armaou, a Greek national living in Beirut, lost her eye in the deadly explosion and shared her account of the incident.

“I was home, I live on the fourth floor. There was nothing left, everything was destroyed. They took me to three hospitals and there was no place to put me,” the injured Greek woman told SKAI.

“Blood was running from my face and eyes, people were running like crazy on the street,” she continued.

Anna was lucky compared to some. It was confirmed late Tuesday by the Greek Embassy in Lebanon that a Greek citizen died in the explosion that rocked the capital. Five other Greeks were also injured.
