The Church of Panagia tis Rokas at Prophitis Ilias in Heraklion, was damaged earlier this week as an unknown individual or individuals set fire to the altar, Neakriti.gr reported.

The burnt altar was discovered by a local, Christina Anogeianaki, who expressed while "everything turned to ashes, nothing happened to the two icons of the Most Holy Theotokos, which were placed on the Holy Table."

The Fire and Police Department will jointly investigate the incident.

The two priests of the parish of Prophet Elias, Fr. Stylianos and Fr. Kyriakos, were immediately notified, and saddened by the attack.

It is noted that there were no witnesses.

This small and picturesque church located below the castle of Nikiforos Fokas, is not locked so that the faithful and visitors can visit and light a candle.
