Greece collects medical supplies to help the victims of the Beirut explosion

Attica Regional Authority in collaboration with the Medical Association of Athens and the Oloi Mazi Boroume (All Together We Can) philanthropic organisation, are collecting donations of medicines and medical supplies, to support the victims of the Beirut explosion.

The governor of Attica, Giorgos Patoulis said: “We are on the side of Beirut and we actively support our fellow human beings who have been affected by this shocking catastrophe and are being severely tested at this time.” He stressed that the collaboration is creating “a chain of humanity and solidarity.”

The Beirut aid collection points will be set up around Attica on Thursday August 13, from 10am to 1 pm.

An appeal has been issued for specific supplies, some of which include medical dressings (bandages, adhesive tapes, gauze bandage and gauze pads), blood pressure instruments, burn gels (like flagyl/flogocalm) or sprays, disposable gloves, disposable masks, batteries, dextrose drip bottles, and eyedrops among others.

“We collect medicines and medical supplies and join forces with the local health authorities to treat the injured and support the country’s health facilities. We are present in this tragedy, performing our human duty all together to alleviate human suffering and to contribute with all the means at our disposal, to the faster restoration of normalcy in the lives of the victims and the city,” he added.

  • Ambelokipi – Church of Agios Dimitrios
  • Glyfada – Galleria shopping center
  • Zografou – Church of Agios Therapontas
  • Ilioupoli – Fleming Square
  • Kallithea – Kallithea Town Hall
  • Kifissia – shopping center on Kolokotroni Street
  • Kolonaki – Church of Agios Dionysiou Areopagitou
  • Kypseli – central square of Kypseli
  • Maroussi – Maroussi Power Station
  • Nea Ionia – Church of Agios Georgios
  • Nea Makri – central square
  • Nea Smyrni – Galaxias complex
  • Neo Psychiko – Church of Agia Sofia
  • Nikaia – Nikaia Town Hall
  • Palaio Faliro – Floisvos Square
  • Piraeus – Municipal Theater
  • Rafina – central square
  • Halandri – Church of Agios Nikolaos
  • Holargos-Papagou – Holargos Center

The municipalities of Agia Varvara and of Dionyssos have week-long collections for the above and for food, including baby food and evaporated milk.

Meanwhile, Greece has offered Lebanon help with restoration work in museums and monuments following the deadly explosion at the port of Beirut, the Culture & Sports Ministry announced on Tuesday.

Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni conveyed to her Lebanese counterpart through the Greek embassy in Beirut the condolences over the deaths and incalculable destruction of the city.

She also said the Ministry offered to put together a specialists task force with conservators, archaeologists and engineers to "help to quickly restore damage to your monuments and to the historical memory of your people" as an obligation and an act of solidarity to their difficult work ahead.
