Captain of the famous Manchester United Football Club has been arrested for an "alleged incident" on the Greek island of Mykonos on Thursday night.

Harry Maguire, who doubles up as a defender for the English national team, was taking time off after Manchester United were eliminated by Spanish side Sevilla last Sunday.

The England defender, 27, is reported to have been arrested following an incident on the Greek island.

Manchester United said in a statement that "the club is aware of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos last night."

"Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully co-operating with the Greek authorities," the statement said, adding that "At this time we will be making no further comment."

Two other British people were arrested in relation to the incident.

According to Proto Thema, the 27-year-old was transferred to the Syros prosecutor's office and denied all allegations.

Locals reportedly informed police that half an hour after midnight on Friday, two groups of Englishmen were fighting outside a bar.

When police intervened to stop the altercation, one of the groups attacked the Greek police, verbally and physically.

As a result, the police brought three Englishmen - among them the United central defender - to the Mykonos police station, according to Proto Thema.
