The fire that broke out at the Mycenae archaeological site on Sunday afternoon, has not caused any damage to antiquities at first inspection, the Ministry of Culture said in a statement.
Mycenae (Μυκήνες) is one of the most evocative archaeological sites in the world. It is located in the Argolis, Peloponnese.
The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. in an area of forest and agricultural land in the vicinity. Visitors and staff at the archaeological site were evacuated as a precaution.
However, flames entered the archaeological site at one point, luckily without doing any real damage or threatening the antiquities.
A force of 56 firefighters, two ground teams and 17 fire engines, assisted by four aircraft and two helicopters, brought the fire under partial control.
They will remain there overnight to completely extinguish the fire and prevent any possible re-ignitions.
