British woman dies in speedboat accident in Kerkyra (updated)

A British woman has been killed off the Greek island of Kerkyra (Corfu), after being hit by a speedboat.

The victim is understood to have suffered severe leg injuries after being struck by the vessel’s propeller.

She was discovered by bathers close to Avlaki beach on the north-east of the island on Monday morning, ERT reported.

It said she had been hit by a speedboat towing a water skier and that the vessel fled the scene.

The 60-year-old was taken to Corfu general hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

ERT said the victim’s husband and daughter had been informed of her death, and that port authorities are looking for the driver of the speedboat who disappeared following the accident, which took place about 400-500 metres from the shore.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We are in contact with the local authorities following reports that a British woman has died in Kerkyra Corfu.”

Three young Britons are being questioned by police on the Ionian island of Corfu over the death of a 60-year-old British holidaymaker who was run over by a speedboat while she was swimming, local media reported on Tuesday.

Claire Glatman, 60, was reportedly run over by a speedboat pulling a water-skier while she was swimming at Avlaki, sustaining extensive injuries to her lower extremities.
