British woman dies in speedboat accident in Kerkyra (updated)

A British woman has been killed off the Greek island of Kerkyra (Corfu), after being hit by a speedboat.

The victim is understood to have suffered severe leg injuries after being struck by the vessel’s propeller.

She was discovered by bathers close to Avlaki beach on the north-east of the island on Monday morning, ERT reported.

It said she had been hit by a speedboat towing a water skier and that the vessel fled the scene.

The 60-year-old was taken to Corfu general hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

ERT said the victim’s husband and daughter had been informed of her death, and that port authorities are looking for the driver of the speedboat who disappeared following the accident, which took place about 400-500 metres from the shore.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We are in contact with the local authorities following reports that a British woman has died in Kerkyra Corfu.”

Claire Glatman, 60, was reportedly run over by a speedboat pulling a water-skier while she was swimming at Avlaki, sustaining extensive injuries to her lower extremities. The speedboat left the scene of the accident and disappeared, according to witnesses, who also said the hellinc coast guard responded to the incident immediately and pulled Glatman out of the water but were unable to resuscitate her.
