Firefighters fight fire on three fronts in Mytilene

By 4 years ago

Firefighters are currently battling a blaze in Mytilene, Lesvos with three active fronts- Vatousa, Antissa and Moria.

According to the first information from the local authorities, the fires broke out almost at the same time and the situation is very dangerous due to very strong winds.

All available fire trucks are fighting the fire. The Commander of the Fire Service, Konstantinos Theofilopoulos, is on the scene coordinating the operation and has requested the assistance of water-bombing aircrafts.

Shortly before midnight, a fire broke out in the area of Moria, specifically in Agios Dimitrios. According to AMNA, the refugees revolted at the news that several of them will be transferred to warehouses, due to the number of positive cases in the camp. However the flames spread inside the overcrowded structure and according to local media, it is currently being evacuated.

It is recalled last week, the first coronavirus case was reported in Greece’s largest migrant camp. The Moria Reception and Identification Center was placed under quarantine for two weeks.

According to the latest data, Greece’s overcrowded migrant camp on the island of Lesvos houses 12,714 people, several times its capacity of 2,757.

Tens of thousands of refugees and migrants, including thousands of unaccompanied children, are living in squalid conditions in overcrowded camps on several Greek islands after arriving from the nearby Turkish coast.
