Almost a week after the catastrophic fire that turned the Moria migrant camp to ashes and left thousands of illegal immigrants on the street without shelter, the Minister of Civil Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis announced that the Greek police have made arrests.
Five young foreign nationals were arrested while another, who has been identified, is still at large," stated Citizen Protection Minister Chrisochoidis on Tuesday from Mytilene, the main town on the island of Lesvos.
Chrisochoidis congratulated the police officers on Lesvos and noted that "the arrests disprove the scenarios of the extremists."
Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum and a Member of Parliament for Chios, Notis Mitarachi, said on Twitter that "The arsonists of Moria are detained, temporary structurs are ready, the tests for COVID-19 are done. And everyone's safety is guaranteed."
Last week, Development Minister Adonis Georgiadis called for the immediate deportation of any residents of the Moria migrant camp who may have contributed to a fire that destroyed the facility.
“People who do not respect the Laws of the Hellenic Republic and who destroy public property do not deserve asylum in Greece,” Georgiadis said in a post on Twitter.
Meanwhile, the revelations of the German artist, photographer and activist, Rebecca Somer, about the sad events that unfolded at the Moria migrant camp in Lesvos last week are shocking, Greek City Times reported. Somer is one of the people who knows the ins and outs of managing illegal migrant flows. Recently, she was in Lesvos and recorded what is happening at the Moria migrant camp, and they are beyond shocking.
In her testimony, she revealed that the majority of the illegal immigrants, who were overwhelmingly not Syrian, treated local people badly and had orchestrated the fires that raged across the Moria camp with German NGO's.
She also revealed that jihadists were among the illegal immigrants, including former Taliban fighters.
