Cyclone Ianos left floods, power outages and extensive damage in its wake on Friday.
Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (DEDDIE) crews labored in dire conditions to repair power networks damaged on the islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaca.
DEDDIE also issued a warning to the public not to touch cables or other elements of the power network on the ground, which may be live.
According to reports, Ithaca had been hit the worst. Fallen trees are obstructing the island's road network, while part of the road at the village of Piasaetos has been destroyed. In addition to the power failure on the entire island, there are also serious problems in telecommunications.
The mayor of Ithaca, Dionisis Stanitsas, spoke to MEGA about the “very serious” situation on the island.
In Zakynthos, electricity has been restored in the main town and its suburbs, the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO SA) said on Friday.
On the island of Kefalonia, the biggest problem was in the area of Aghia Efimia, municipality of Sami, where the heavy rainfall combined with gale force winds created muddy torrents filled with debris. In the same area, winds reaching 11 on the Beaufort scale swept away and threw three sailing boats ashore, while at least four vessels sunk inside the port.
