UPDATE: Owner of Grande Bretagne denies selling iconic hotel in Athens

After about 150 years of operation, according to information from business circles, the Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens has new owners - a Qatari business group, Greek media initially reported.

However, sources from the owner company about the sale of the well-known central Hotel Grande Bretagne, was denied.

The iconic hotel has been closed since the COVID-19 lockdowns in March despite rumors that it would be operating normally if there were reservations in early September.

Great personalities of culture who came to Athens for concerts, performances or tourist reasons, stayed at the Hotel Grande Bretagne. Among them are the Scorpions, Lenny Kravitz, Slayer, Kirk Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Amal Alamuddin and many more on a long list.

The history of the Grande Bretagne Hotel The award-winning 5-star Hotel Grande Bretagne has been right in the heart of the city since 1874 and is within walking distance of luxury shopping, museums and the business district.

In 1888 the hotel was one of the first buildings in Athens to be electrified.

In 2003 the hotel was closed for a year and underwent a complete renovation (cost 112 million euros) to return to its former glory. The modernized building now has 384 rooms (79 suites), including 2 Royal Suites of 550 square meters, which cost up to 32,000 euros per night.
