New interpretive panels have been revealed at the 42nd Street Memorial in Tsikalaria, Chania, telling the moving and inspiring story of the battle that unfolded on that site on the 27th May, 1941.

The Memorial pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand servicemen. The action at 42nd Street on that day was one of the last major actions during the battle for Crete which pushed the Germans into retreat, buying vital time for the evacuation of Allied troops from the island.

The Memorial was established by the ‘Friends of the 42nd Trust’ with support from the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs and Δήμος Χανίων – Municipality of Chania, among many other friends and supporters in Crete, Australia and New Zealand.

The Australian Embassy is proud to be a supporter of the Memorial, having arranged and contributed to the replacement of the interpretive panels.
