Two Australian suburbs have been named in the top 40 coolest neighbourhoods in the world!

According to Time Out’s official global ranking of the 40 coolest neighbourhoods on the planet, the NSW Inner West suburb of Marrickville which is well known for its Greek heritage, is the tenth coolest place in the world right now.

Marrickville "is a true melting pot, and this diversity is surely the X-factor behind its ascent as Sydney’s trending suburb," Time Out published.

"Waves of Portuguese, Vietnamese, Italian and Greek migrants have added to the richness of Marrickville’s culture, spearheading the emergence of perhaps the most eclectic food scene in the city. Streets lined with Federation-era houses and leafy enclaves protect the suburb’s all-are-welcome essence," the article added.

Every year, Time Out surveys thousands of people around the globe to discover the world’s coolest neighbourhoods: the places that represent the spirit of the greatest cities on earth.

"Despite its proximity to the eye-wateringly pricy inner city, Marrickville has managed to remain affordable and inclusive, largely thanks to the continuing absence of soulless high-rise developments and juggernaut hospitality franchises. Long may it last."

It is recalled earlier this year, the Mayor of Inner West Council, Darcy Byrne announced the council’s decision to formally recognise Marrickville and Dulwich Hill as a Greek Precinct.

“The Hellenic diaspora has done more to build multiculturalism in the Inner West as any other group. The contribution of Greek migrants over more than half a century has been central to making the Inner West the birthplace of Australian multiculturalism,” Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne exclusively told Greek City Times.

To this day if you walk down Marrickville Road or Illawarra Road, you will hear Greek being spoken everywhere.

“Whilst Melbourne is famous as a Greek population centre, the truth is the Greek migrants in Marrickville have been there longer than any part of Australia. It is so important we recognise the contribution they have made…expressing thanks and respect to all of the Greek migrants and the descendants who have made it the Inner West it is today,” Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne concluded.

Yarraville in Melbourne's west, was also named the fifth coolest neighbourhood in the world.
