Last week, Condé Nast Traveler (CNT) published the results of the 2020 Readers' Choice Awards survey.
Four Greek islands - Folegandros, Zakynthos, Crete and Mykonos - dominated the Europe list of the 35 World’s Best Islands outside the United States.
For its 33rd Readers’ Choice Awards, CNT invited 600,000 travellers to vote online for the Top Islands in six areas – Asia, Australia, and the South Pacific, the Caribbean and the Atlantic, Africa and the Indian Ocean, Europe, and North America.
According to Condé Nast Traveller, readers "voted for the places that they love and would return to – along with their favourite means of getting there." It added: "While these awards are often cause for celebration, this year they serve as a reminder of the wider world out there. The Readers’ Choice Awards celebrates and supports the travel industry, shines a spotlight on new places, and revisits familiar ones with a fresh eye. All of them under one sky."
In the heart of the Aegean, Folegandros was named the best island in Europe!
This remote island with its natural beauty and laid-back pace has become a favourite for those who are after an authentic Greek island experience.
"Craving Santorini's famous whitewashed houses and cobblestoned streets, but without all of the crowds? Look no further than Folegandros, Santorini's smaller neighbour to the northwest by some 40 miles, which has all that and more. During the day, visit the island's most famous monument, Chrysospiliá ("Golden Cave"); if it's remote beaches you're after, try Agios Georgios or Ambeli," CNT published.
