German Foreign Minister cancels scheduled visit to Turkey

In what can be seen as a move to signal Turkey, German Foreign Minister Haiko Maas has canceled Wednesday's visit to Turkey as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan continues to provoke with moves such as the illegal Navtex re-launching of the Oruç Reis research vessel in Greece's continental shelf in the East Mediterranean.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will have a meeting with Maas tomorrow at 19:00 local time.

Maas has adjusted his program as well, according to the German foreign ministry, and will not travel to Turkey on Wednesday as scheduled.

On the contrary, on Tuesday he will also be in Nicosia where he will be received by Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiadis, and will have a meeting with his foreign minister counterpart, Nikos Christodoulidis. Then he will be in Greece to meet with Mitsotakis and Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias.

The move to cancel the meeting in Turkey is seen as German anger as Turkey has provoked by against entering Greece's continental shelf while violating to United Nations resolutions on the closure of Varosha, an occupied and unclosed town in northern Cyprus. Days ago Turkey reopened the beach area of Varosha.

These provocative actions, in addition to Turkey's direct involvement in the invasion attempt of Artsakh, is making it more difficult for Turkey's closest allies like Germany, to defend the constant provocations and aggression.
