Keeping the streets of Athens butt-free with the Ballot Bin

Twenty more large yellow ashtrays that serve as ballot boxes have been installed around Athens.

The Gopa Project (gopa means cigarette butt in Greek) which was launched last year, invites citizens and visitors to vote with their cigarette butt instead of littering.

Each Ballot Bin displays a question and two answers. E.g:

  • Were Ross and Rachel on a break? (YES/NO)
  • Καλύτερος ποδοσφαιριστής όλων των εποχών (Μαραντόνα/Πελέ)

“‘Do you know that cigarette butts thrown in the city end up in the sea?’ Did you know that cigarette butts contain plastic and have a lifespan of more than 10 years?’ The purpose is not only to answer but from now on to throw the cigarette butts in the big special ashtrays – ballot boxes that have been placed in Athens. We just placed another 20 and we continue!”Athens mayor Kostas Bakogiannis posted.
