Street cleaning operation in Neos Kosmos, Athens

Crews from the Municipality of Athens’ sanitation department using large sweepers and street washing machines, cleaned and washed the streets in Neos Kosmos on Sunday.

According to an announcement by the Municipality of Athens, the daily, mass washes and disinfections have been intensified even more in the effort to improve the quality of life of the citizens. At the same time the disinfection has become a valuable weapon against the coronavirus pandemic.

It is recalled that similar cleanups have occurred in recent months in Kolonaki, Exarchia, Metaxourgeio, Votanikos, Probonas, Petralona and Plaka.

"Sunday cleaning activities have been implemented since the beginning of the year and have been successfully integrated into the overall and evolving plan of the Municipal Authority for a clean and safe Athens," Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis said.

“The operation was completed at noon, the area was handed over more beautiful and clean and the hard work for the culture of everyday life of all of us continues with greater intensity,” he commented about the Neos Kosmos cleaning activity.

Last week, Bakoyannis also announced a new era for recycling began in Athens. The Municipality of Athens is procuring 27 state-of-the-art new garbage trucks for recyclable materials and 4,000 new blue bins, bringing their total throughout the capital to 6,000. “The essential recycling acquires a leading role in the daily life of the city, reaching every neighbourhood and every citizen,” he posted on social media.

Furthermore, twenty more large yellow ashtrays that serve as ballot boxes have been installed around Athens. The Gopa Project (gopa means cigarette butt in Greek) which was launched last year, invites citizens and visitors to vote with their cigarette butt instead of littering.
