Erdogan renews call for Macron to undergo mental check

Turkish President Erdogan has renewed his call for Macron to undergo a mental check, AFP reported.

Yesterday, Erdoğan went on another bombastic rant claiming the French president needs a “mental check" and renewed his call for it again today.

“What is Macron’s problem with Islam and Muslims? He needs mental health treatment,” Erdoğan said yesterday at the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) congress in central Kesareia (Καισάρεια, Turkish: Kayseri) province.

“What can be said to a head of state that treats millions of members of a religious minority in his country this way? First of all, (he needs) a mental check,” Erdoğan added, without sensing the irony of his continuous policy of converting Greek Orthodox Churches in Turkey into mosques.

France in response to yesterday's comments, recalled its ambassador from Ankara.

“President Erdoğan’s comments are unacceptable. Excess and rudeness are not a method. We demand that Erdoğan change the course of his policy because it is dangerous in every respect,” the unnamed French official told AFP yesterday about the decision to withdraw the ambassador.

Erdoğan’s second call for Macron to get a mental check comes in spite of Turkish ally, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, saying earlier today that the comments against the French President "are unacceptable. We call on Turkey to stop this dangerous spiral of confrontation."
