Republican Gus Bilirakis won Florida’s 12th congressional district that represents all of Pasco and northern parts of Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
He grew up in Tarpon Springs, Florida, and is the grandson of Greek immigrants.
Bilirakis gathered a 62.9 majority against Democratic candidate Kimberly Walker (37.1), according to election results.
He was first elected to Congress on November 7, 2006, where he succeeded his father Michael Bilirakis, representing Florida's 9th congressional district until redistricting. Gus serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. He is the Ranking Member of the VA Economic Opportunities Subcommittee and a Member of the VA Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, Health Subcommittee and Communications and Technology Subcommittee.
In Congress, Bilirakis works in a bipartisan manner to control federal spending, make government smaller and smarter, strengthen homeland security, lower taxes, improve education, increase access to quality health care, protect veterans’ benefits, and ensure the long-term viability of Social Security and Medicare.
He is also a leading member of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues.
