Lycabettus Hill

Standing 277 meters above sea level, Lycabettus Hill (sometimes spelt Lykavitos) is the highest point of Athens.

Climbing up to the top is definitely worth the 360° views of Athens! It takes your breath away.

There are three ways to reach the top of Lycabettus Hill:
  • On foot- Although a beautiful walk up via a circular path, it will be a test of endurance and a challenge in summer.
  • Cable car- The entrance is on the corner of Aristippou and Ploutarchou Streets. Kids love taking the 5 minute ride to reach the top. The downside is the cable car moves inside a closed tunnel, so there is no view on the way up or down.
  • Car- Following the Lycabettus ring road will lead you (and the car) to a huge parking lot.

Which ever route you decide to take, all three lead you up to the top of the hill where you will find the tiny whitewashed church of Agios Georgios (St. George) and a wide viewing platform.

Café Lycabettus is also situated right next to the church and is a good spot for breakfast and lunch.

Slightly below the church, climbers will find Restaurant Orizontes, that offers delicious food and spectacular views across Athens.

The view from Lycabettus Hill is best enjoyed at sunset whilst waiting for the lights of the Acropolis, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Panathenaic Stadium and Ancient Agora to come on.

You will also be reminded that Athens is surrounded by sea with spectacular views across the Aegean.
