Greek Navy wants to boost ties with the U.S. by purchasing frigates

The Greek Navy has proposed purchasing the American Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC) frigates  to continue boosting its ties with the United States and upgrade its fleet.

According to Kathimerini, "the proposal is fully aligned with the government’s declared strategic goals, while it is also seen positively by the Americans, who want to expand their military-industrial footprint in Greece."

The proposed Greek Navy agreement includes the supply of four MMSC frigates and the participation of Greek shipyards in developing the new American FFG(X) type frigate.

The plan envisions the creation of a naval force by 2030 that will be aligned with mostly American standards.

The U.S. is not the only country that has the interest of the Greek Navy.

In 2019, France and Greece signed a letter of intent to open up formal discussions on a potential purchase of two Belharra frigates, which are being build by the Naval Group for France’s navy.

However, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos said then that there was still a “long way to go” before a final deal is reached between the two nations.
