The mayor of Mytilene, Stratis Kytelis accompanied by the president of the Mytilene City Council, Demosthenes Hatzigiannis and Deputy Mayor of Culture, Panagiotis Tsakiris, attended Sunday's commemorative event to mark the 108th anniversary of the liberation of Lesvos.
The Greek flag was carried from the historic town hall to the Castle of Mytilene.
A wreath was also laid at the memorial statue of Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis.
The event took place in accordance with covid-19 measures.
"Today is a day of double celebration. We celebrate the liberation of Mytilene and at the same time the Archangels who are the Protectors of our Air Force. The liberation of Mytilene 108 years ago, on November 8, 1912, after 450 years of slavery, became the Holy Day of the feast of the Archangels. A day we remember and honour, with reverence, inspired by the example of our ancestors, who showed perseverance, patience and will, all the difficult years of slavery, until the time came to shake off the Ottoman yoke. Let the memory of the greatness of this Day inspire us, the difficult period we are going through due to the economic and health Crisis, in order to face the challenges together.
