Paros island’s new airport project will be funded with over 43 million euros through the national program on infrastructure and transport for 2014-2020, Paros municipality and the Infrastructure and Transport Ministry said on Thursday.

Contributing to the funding is the EU NSRF program for the corresponding years.

The ministry will initiate the bidding process. Work is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2021 and be completed by end-2023.

The upgrade of the exiting airport will include a new terminal with a surface area of 12,000 square kilometres, including CUTE technology for passenger processing, and a facility to process waste; a new control tower and fire station; and retail stores, including tax-free ones.

The infrastructure program, with the airport as centrepiece, will provide funding also for other services on the island, including upgrades of public utility networks and for archaeological excavations and research.

Earlier this year, Paros was awarded the title of the Best Island of 2020 in ‘Europe’s Top 10 Islands’ category at this year’s Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards.

In the category of ‘Europe’s Top 10 Islands’, readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

“This 76-square-mile shelter has some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, with white sands surrounded by steep cliffs and turquoise waters. The inland of the island fascinates visitors with its traditional Cycladic architecture, small villages and ancient monuments. Those who are looking for nightlife will be happy with the many clubs on the island, while those who prefer relaxation can also enjoy massage and quiet moments,” said T+L.
