Athens Airport ranked 6th safest globally on COVID-19-related safety protocols

Athens International Airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' has emerged as the world's sixth safest airport for effective implementation of novel coronavirus-related health as well as safety protocols.

Greece entered its second nationwide lockdown last weekend. Furthermore, there is a nationwide night curfew from 9pm-5am.

The Safe Travel Barometer, is the world’s most comprehensive database of COVID-19 health and safety protocols, and traveler experience initiatives announced by suppliers which influences traveler decisions in the new normal. The Safe Travel Score is an industry-first COVID-19 rating initiative, created in the wake of recovery from the pandemic. For airports, the Safe Travel Score is based on an independent audit of 29 traveler health and safety measures, along with traveler convenience initiatives and overall traveler experience announced by airports, regulatory and government authorities to alleviate traveler anxiety and boost confidence.

According to the Safe Travel Score, Athens International Airport 'Eleftherios Venizelos' ranked sixth among the world's safest airports and second among Europe's safest.

Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos, is the largest international airport in Greece, serving the city of Athens and region of Attica. It began operation on 28 March 2001 (in time for the 2004 Summer Olympics). It replaced the old Ellinikon International Airport. As of 2019, it is the 26th-busiest airport in Europe.

Domestic flights

From 6am on Monday, November 9, domestic flights and commercial and general/business aviation to all airports in the country will be permitted only for essential travel, including for reasons of health, professional/business trips, family reasons (reunification of families) and a return to the permanent place of residence.

There are exceptions including: Hellenic national healthcare system flights, state flights, sanitary flights, humanitarian flights, emergency flights, military flights, fire-fighting flights, Frontex flights, technical landings where passengers do not disembark, ferry flights and cargo flights.

International flights

From Tuesday, November 10, all passengers of international flights departing from Greek airports must fill in a Passenger Locator Form.

As of 6am on Wednesday, November 11, travellers entering Greece must present a negative COVID-19 test no older than 72 hours, upon arrival. At the same time, passengers also need to fill in a Passenger Locator Form (PLF) at least a day before arrival, providing information that will include their departure airport, the address where they will be staying and the expected duration of their stay in Greece, among others.

The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority stressed that before accepting passengers for boarding, airlines must check:

  • the PLF submission confirmation at least the day before the flight, which is a mandatory travel document
  • the correspondence with the QR code and the PLF

Airlines that do not comply with this control obligation will be responsible for the repatriation of passengers at the expense of the company.
