The planet came to a standstill in 2020 and travel "froze", however British travellers wanted to holiday in Athens.

According to Hostelworld, the Greek capital was the most searched for destination by Brits looking to escape for a holiday during the pandemic.

In fact, the hostel booking platform reported that it saw a spike of 400% in searches for stays in Athens between April and October.

It is recalled the UK allowed quarantine-free international travel to 59 “lower risk countries” including Greece.

However, as of Saturday 14th November, passengers arriving in the UK from Greece, except from five islands, must self-isolate for 14 days.

Greece was removed from the United Kingdom’s “travel corridor” following the rise in covid-19 cases.

Only arrivals from the islands of Corfu, Crete, Kos, Rhodes and Zakynthos will be exempt from the 14-day self-isolation.
