Tram service to and from Syntagma resumes

The tram service to and from Syntagma Square will recommence on Friday, November 20.

Syntagma Tram

It is recalled the tram’s service between Kasomouli Street in the Athens neighbourhood of Neos Kosmos and central Syntagma, was suspended in October 2018 amid concerns that the ground beneath the tracks, over the old Ilissos riverbed, was at risk of subsiding.

According to an announcement by Stasy (Urban Rail Transport SA), engineers installed pressure sensors to measure and record load distribution along the tunnel under the tram line.

From the data collected and the tests carried out over a 2-month period, there was no deformation in the cover plate of Ilissos from the tram crossings.

This means that the line will be put back into operation without structural improvements.

The resumption of the tram service is also expected to significantly contribute to the decongestion of other means of public transport.

Even though the tram service will resume on Friday, tests will continue to be carried out for another four months.
