By 3 years ago

Crews from the Municipality of Athens’ sanitation department using large sweepers and street washing machines, cleaned and washed the streets in Omonia on Sunday.

According to an announcement by the Municipality of Athens, the cleanliness and disinfection of the city is a top priority for the Municipality of Athens. The large cleaning-disinfection action will continue so that the city in all 129 neighbourhoods will be cleaner, brighter and as safe as possible.

It is recalled that similar cleanups have occurred in recent months in Kolonaki, Exarchia, Metaxourgeio, Votanikos, Probonas, Petralona, Plaka and Neos Kosomos.

“A circle that never closes. It is the cycle of cleanliness and public health in Athens. With all our strength, with all the means at our disposal. Cleaning Sunday in Omonia and the streets around it,” Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis commented about the Omonia cleaning activity..

A new era for recycling has began in Athens. The Municipality of Athens is procuring 27 state-of-the-art new garbage trucks for recyclable materials and 4,000 new blue bins, bringing their total throughout the capital to 6,000. “The essential recycling acquires a leading role in the daily life of the city, reaching every neighbourhood and every citizen,” he posted on social media.

Furthermore, twenty more large yellow ashtrays that serve as ballot boxes have been installed around Athens. The Gopa Project (gopa means cigarette butt in Greek) which was launched last year, invites citizens and visitors to vote with their cigarette butt instead of littering.

Omonia Square

It is recalled the redesigned Omonia Square, with its signature fountain, was unveiled to Athenians earlier this year.

One of the largest water fountains in Europe in terms of water volume, the 30-meter-wide fountain shoots water 20 meters high. It has a total of 188 water jets and 177 underwater headlights.
