Notis Sfakianakis trial for possession of weapon and drugs to begin on December 2

Legendary Greek singer Notis Sfakianakis was taken to the Criminal Court in order to be tried and shouted ironically "I am a criminal" upon his arrival at the prosecutor.

The prosecutor proceeded with the criminal prosecution for illegal possession of a weapon and possession of drugs for personal use.

The trial is set for December 2.

"I do not want to say anything. I do not want to say anything because I will tell you something bad," Sfakianakis told reporters as he left the court.

His arrest on Sunday evening was after a police check on Vouliagmeni Avenue.

"I have the gun with me because I'm in danger. The license papers had expired and had not been renewed, Sfakianakis said.

The arrest took place shortly after 20:00 on Vouliagmeni Avenue at the junction with Iasonidou.

After the detection of drugs and weapons, Sfakianakis was fully cooperative and did not put up any resistance when police led him in handcuffs to the Argyroupoli Police Station.

It is worth noting that he went to his house in Varkiza having sent an SMS and for this reason no fine was imposed for unnecessary transportation.

For cocaine he is not said to have given sufficient explanations.

When asked if he had something illegal on him, he answered no, but the experienced eye of the police officer was nailed to a bag he had in the passenger seat.

The police opened it and then surprised to find it had a 9-gauge Beretta pistol and white powder. When asked what it was, without being in the mood to hide, he said: "It's what you know ...".

He even told them, "do your job because you do it well."

Immediately, the police handcuffed him and took him to the Argyroupolis Police Station and from there to the Vouliagmeni Security Department, where he spent the night as there was no detention facility available in Argyroupoli.

The law firm of Alexis Kougias undertook the defense of Sfakianakis.

The announcement of the law firm in detail:

"Our law firm undertook the defense of leading Greek singer Notis Sfakianakis.

As reported in the media, Mr. Sfakianakis is accused of illegal possession of a weapon and possession of a small amount of drugs.

The charge of possession of a firearm was attributed to formal reasons, because the license to legally possess a small weapon with a caliber of 9 mm, which had not been renewed due to the coronavirus, had expired. He owned this weapon for decades for his personal safety due to the peculiarity of his profession and the hours he works and the money he carries, since many of his colleagues have fallen victim to robberies and dangerous cases.

Regarding the small amount of drugs, which was found in his car, Mr. Sfakianakis stated that it was not his, giving full explanations for it.

Mr. Sfakianakis will be taken to the Prosecutor but accompanied by a lawyer associate of our office. His case will be postponed and explicitly appointed, because the head of our office, Alexios Kougias, is currently present as a lawyer for a Three-member Criminal Court of Appeal in Komotini and it is impossible for him to appear in the Court where the case of Mr. Sfakianakis will be heard."
