Four Greek resorts have been recognised at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2020.

World Travel Awards

WTA was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry. Today, the WTA brand is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.

Achieving one the highest distinctions in this year’s competition – under especially challenging circumstances – highlights that Greece is a universal reference point for the tourism industry.

Tourism Ministry and GNTO voted “World’s Leading Tourist Board”

Greece’s Ministry of Tourism and the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) was awarded the “World’s Leading Tourist Board” at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2020.

“With great joy and pride we accept on behalf of our country the highest distinction of the WTA awards, an award that our country wins for the first time,” Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis said.

“The WTA award is a great distinction, which reflects the successful opening of Greece to tourism during the pandemic. It shows that our country, with prudence, seriousness and a spirit of solidarity, faced the adventure of COVID-19 – a phenomenon considered the biggest challenge facing world tourism for the last 20 years, at least – in the most effective way,” he added.

On her part, GNTO President Angela Gerekou thanked the WTA for its support: “It is our responsibility to achieve tourism recovery as fast as possible and in a sustainable way. I dedicate this award to all the heroes and heroines of the tourism industry. I hope and wish that 2021 will mark the beginning of a better future.”
