The world globe with a red ribbon (an internationally recognised symbol for AIDS awareness) and the words "we keep our promise" was illuminated on the facade of the Hellenic Parliament on Tuesday evening.

World AIDS Day

Many cities and famous landmarks around the globe lit up for World AIDS Day to raise awareness and to stand in solidarity with those affected by the disease.

This year's theme was Global solidarity, shared responsibility.

Greece is included among European Union countries with high rates of late diagnoses. An estimated 23% of HIV-positive people in Greece do not know their status.

Current global targets are geared towards ending the HIV epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.
