Mitsotakis: Greek exports are enduring despite the pandemic

The foreign trade sector is proving resilient and supports the Greek economy, said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his greeting at the conference of the Panhellenic Exporters Association,

He noted that this event is a "small feat".

The goal is for Greece to produce and export, and he estimated that despite the difficulties of the pandemic, foreign trade can lead to growth again.

"Our exports are proving resilient: In the first 9 months of 2020, they reached 17.5 billion, exceeding by 253 million the corresponding performance of 2019," Mitsotakis highlighted.

At the same time, the Prime Minister spoke about the simultaneous reduction of imports during the same period, which fell by 6 billion, improving our trade balance.

"Which means that the products from Greek hands are in a better position to meet domestic demand in quantity and quality," Mitsotakis said.

"Top example? The immediate shift of our industry to the production of sanitary material, which has ensured national adequacy and is already conquering international markets," he added.

Mitsotakis stressed that this is no small feat.

"The pandemic has, of course, rearranged the priorities, with the first being the preservation of the productive base, employment and income," he said.

"As I stressed in Parliament, in the framework of the 4th Refundable Advance, 2 billion euros have already been confirmed for payment to a total of 416,000 companies," the Prime Minister pointed out and added:" In the crisis, 100,000 new jobs are subsidized by the state."

At the same time, he stated that the national goals are the following:

  • The increase in the share of exports in GDP from 38% today to 48% by 2023.
  • The increase of industrial production from 9.5% to 12%.
  • The doubling of foreign investments by 2023.
