Extension of Metro line 2 in Athens - Where will the new stations be located?

Athens Metro.

Infrastructure Minister Costas Karamanlis spoke at an Economist online event, during which he made announcements about the Metro.

The extension of Metro line 2 in Western Athens will proceed with two new stations, as announced by Karamanlis.

The two new stations are located in the Anthoupoli-Ilion section and will serve over 50,000 passengers per day.

He announced that the preliminary design of the project is ready and estimated that at the end of 2021 the €350 million project will begin.

Karamanlis also referred to the extension of the Attiki Odos motorway, but also to important projects throughout Greece, such as:

  • The large flood protection projects, amounting to €1.2 billion.
  • The new railway project - the largest planned in the country - worth €3.3 billion.
  • The new Road Safety Improvement Program that includes upgrades on 7,000 dangerous points across the country.

According to Karamanlis, parallel projects are underway, which were "stuck" for years, such as Metro Line 4 (the largest project to be done in the country, amounting to €1.5 billion), the northern part of E-65 and the Patras-Pyrgos highway.
