Acropolis flooded after downpour

Hours of torrential rainfall on Thursday flooded parts of Athens, including the Acropolis.

Images of the Acropolis flooded has sparked concerns online about the adequate protection of one of the most famous ancient archaeological sites in the world from natural phenomena.

Social media users are also blaming the recently constructed concrete path for wheelchair users, elderly citizens and others with mobility problems.

In response, Greece's Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni noted that "in recent years, the Acropolis has been flooded on the northern slope when there is heavy rainfall."

She also explained that "at the moment only three of the gutters are active in order not to burden the northern slope of the monument and to protect the wall that fell in 2014 due to flooding. The other 17 are deactivated."

As for the necessary hydraulic analysis for the drainage of rainwater, Mendoni stated that "it is being prepared at this time."

New wheelchair lift opens at the Acropolis

The new wheelchair access lift for disabled people to reach Acropolis Hill was inaugurated earlier this month by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Mitsotakis described the new lift, located on the north slope as “an emblematic project” as scores of people will now have easier access to the historical site.
