Greek PM: “Pacta sunt servanda” (Agreements must be kept)

Upon his arrival at the EU Summit in Brussels on Thursday, Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis used the Latin phrase “Pacta sunt servanda” (agreements must be kept), referring to the sanctions EU leaders threatened Turkey if it continued its provocative actions against Greece and Cyprus.

According to the Greek PM, two extremely important issues stand out from the extremely rich agenda of the European Summit, Hungary and Poland's veto to the EU budget and the recovery fund and the relations with Turkey.

"The first concerns the pending veto by Hungary and Poland on the approval of the budget and the Recovery Fund. I believe that the compromise proposal is moving in the right direction and that this exclusion will end today. Greece is one of the first countries to draw up its own plan for how to use the resources of the Recovery Fund," he stated.

Regarding the delinquent behaviour of Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean, the Greek PM said: "the stakes are very, very clear, the credibility of the European Union. At the October European Council, we decided that there would be consequences if Turkey continued its delinquent behaviour. And we agreed that the decision-making date would be this European Council. now, it will be seen if we as Europe really are credible in what we ourselves have agreed. Pacta sunt servanda."
