Minister of National Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, spoke about the resumption of Greece’s armament program which has put the Armed Forces into a “new era.”
Referring to the budget, Panagiotopoulos spoke of an explosion of armament programs worth two billion euros or 375% in relation to the current budget.
The Minister of National Defense also talked about the disinvestment period after 2010, citing how weapon systems since 2012 lacked spare parts.
“With a Turkey that operates threateningly against our sovereign rights, destabilizing the region, and is equipped, we do not take any risks,” said the Greek Defense Minister.
Referring to specific programs that will run in 2021, the Minister spoke about several purchases and upgrades.
These include the French-made Rafale fighter jets – accompanied with new weapons – four frigates and a naval modernization program, the acquisition of four Romeo supersonic helicopters, new anti-tank weapons and new remote control equipment.
