Santorini, a volcanic island in the Cyclades that rests in the middle of the Aegean, has been named for the seventh consecutive year the "Best Island in Europe" at the 2020 Global Traveler Awards.

Furthermore, Greece was named “Favourite Country” for the first time at the awards ceremony, with Ireland and Spain following the Mediterranean country among the most-loved travel destinations.

Following Tahiti, Greece was ranked second among the “Favourite Honeymoon Destinations” in the world.

The party animal of the Cycladic islands, Mykonos, was also named Europe’s third Best Island and ranked seventh in the Best Beaches category.

The Global Traveler Awards recognises the best in the world of leisure and lifestyle travel including goods, services, destinations, hotels, airlines and cruises.

Dimitris Frangakis, general secretary of the Greek National Tourism Organization, welcomed the news as an “encouraging sign ahead of 2021 which will see the gradual recovery of Greek tourism.”

“In an extremely competitive field, our country displays its comparative advantages to the international market,” he added.
