The Italian Philhellenes who fought on the side of Hydra will be honored and the Municipality of the island will initiate the process of naming Sophia Loren an honorary citizen.

The Municipality of Hydra will honor the Philhellenes from Italy who fought together with the Hydraeans during the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.

This was decided during a meeting on December 9 that the Mayor of Hydra, George Koukoudakis, had with the Ambassador of Italy in Greece, Patrizia Falcinelli.

The focus of the discussion was about Filitze Caserta who volunteered in naval battles against the Ottomans.

Reference was also made to another Italian philhellene, Joseph Kiape, who served as Secretary of Lazaros Kountouriotis and had a huge contribution to the 1824 circulation of the Hydra revolutionary newspaper, "The Friend of the Law".
