Enjoy the Acropolis Museum right from your screen

Faced with new challenges, and following the digital trends, the Acropolis Museum launched a new website on Monday, so visitors can enjoy a virtual experience of the museum.

As a precautionary measure to help control the spread of the novel virus in Greece, museums and archaeological sites were closed in March. They reopened on Monday, June 15, with strict safety measures in place, however they are shut again during Greece’s second lockdown.

The programme “Creation of the Digital Acropolis Museum”, showcases the multiple aspects of its exhibits, offers unique experiences in its galleries and creates a new, exciting world for kids and grownups alike.

It is the first website of a Greek Museum to present all the artefacts included in its permanent exhibition making them accessible to the global community.

The catalogue includes 2,156 artefacts with extensive descriptions, an interactive glossary, photographs, draws and in many cases videos. Artefacts kept in the Museum’s storerooms will be added gradually.

New multimedia spaces have also been installed in the Acropolis Museum, enabling visitors to explore the history of the museum’s extensive collection and compare it to exhibitions in other renowned museums around the world.

The website is available in both Greek and English. Furthermore it ensures access to colour-blind visitors and is user-friendly to visually impaired people.

Website for children

The Acropolis Museum created a website especially for its little friends on www.acropolismuseumkids.gr.

The “Acropolis Museum Kids” has been designed for children between 6-12 years old.

It invites them to become acquainted with the fascinating world of the Museum while having fun. Inspiring games, amusing videos as well as a series of inventive activities prompt children to think, discover, play, experiment and make their own creations.
