Petsas: We will have stricter COVID-19 measures on New Year's Eve if things get out of hand over Christmas

Government Spokesman Stelios Petsas.. Greece and Turkey are close to reviving talks, says government spokesman

Government spokesman Stelios Petsas called on people not to relax individual COVID-19 measures during the Christmas holidays.

“Gathering can be celebrations for the virus and not for us. There is no room for experimentation,” the government spokesman said.

According to the government spokesman, if things get out of hand at Christmas we will have stricter measures on New Year's Eve.

"As of tonight, a new program of 12,000 sampling checks will be implemented throughout the country," the government spokesman said in a statement.

The government has decided to increase the number of days in home isolation to 7 from 3 that was valid until today, for all those entering from Great Britain, as Petsas.

Specifically, Petsas stressed: the epidemiological situation in many European countries remains aggravated.

Governments are concerned about the holidays and are taking additional restrictive measures.

Even more worrying at European level is the new mutated strain of the virus found in parts of the United Kingdom and other countries.

A strict lockdown has already been imposed in London, and a meeting of the European Crisis Mechanism has already been scheduled at EU level for European coordination

Petsas again appealed to Greeks to observe the restrictive measures.

“Last week we had a further reduction in the number of new cases, hospital admissions and intubations. At the same time, however, both in areas of West Attica and in the regional unit of Kozani, the viral load remains high," he said.

"We appeal, once again, not only to the residents of the troubled areas, but to the citizens of the whole country not to relax during the holidays," Petsas continued.

"We are all tired of the quarantine that took us away from our loved ones, but we must not let a meeting of a few hours threaten our lives and ruin everything we have achieved in the past weeks," he added.
