Kindergartens and primary schools in Greece to reopen on January 11

Kindergarten and primary school students will return to the classroom next Monday, January 11.

Grades 7-12 are to restart remote learning on Friday January 8 - until further notice.

“The current conditions allow us to gradually start opening our schools on the basis of experts’ recommendations,” Education Minister Niki Kerameus said on Monday.

Kindergartens and primary schools will open first due to the “special psycho-emotional needs of our young pupils,” she added.

New safety measures will be introduced to minimise the simultaneous presence of students' parents and teachers.

It is recalled Greece tightened coronavirus for a week, to deal with a flood of new cases.

The Health Ministry's committee of coronavirus experts will assess epidemiological data again next week, to then propose a date for the safe full physical reopening of grades 7-12.

Additionally, Education Ministry officials said that they plan to reduce the curriculum load that grade 12 students will be tested on in the nationwide end-of-year exams.

An online platform through which teachers can apply for free coronavirus testing will also be launched soon.
