Athens Airport welcomes visitors with an exhibition on the Revolution of 1821

By 3 years ago

Visitors arriving at Athens International Airport are greeted by an exhibition of the Museum of Cycladic Art entitled 'Antiquarianism and Philhellenism. The Thanassis and Marina Martinos Collection.'

The exhibit which is hosted in the 'Art & Culture' area of the airport, was organised on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.

Travellers to the airport will be able to see the exhibition until April 30, 2021.

The panorama presented in the airport exhibition space copies a wallpaper panorama that was printed in France in 1828.

Depicted in it are celebrated ancient Greek locations (Thermopylae, Delphi, Parnassos), as well as scenes from the Greeks’ Struggle for Independence (1821-1828) from the Ottoman yoke.

The original wallpaper panorama will be on display in the exhibition 'Antiquarianism and Philhellenism. The Thanassis and Marina Martinos Collection' at the Museum of Cycladic Art.

When museums are allowed to open and welcome visitors again, the exhibition will be curated by Dr Fani-Maria Tsigakou and Professor Nikolaos Chr. Stampolidis.

The displays come from a unique Philhellenic Gallery of 19th century European works and Greek Neoclassicism that will be showcased for the first time, next to important antiquities from major museums in Greece and Italy.

The exhibition aims to highlight the antiquarian aspects of the philhellenic movement, before, during and after the 1821 Revolution.
