Ancient Greek Statues unearthed near Athens Airport

During recent excavations near Athens International Airport, two ancient Greek statues of female figures were uncovered from inside a white ancient Greek burial monument.

The announcement was made by Greece's Culture and Sports Ministry on Sunday.

The grave column was found during routine excavations in the area where construction works to build the new Town Hall Municipality of Paiania will begin.

The two women in the fragmented sculpture are facing each other: On the right, the woman who is wearing a transparent robe, is seated on an elegant seat with her feet resting on a footstool. On the left, in front of her, stands her servant supporting her head on her left hand in sorrow.

The theme of the performance is typical in tomb reliefs of the 4th century BC.

Similar grave columns have been unearthed in the Holy Temple of Agia Paraskevi in Markopoulo and at the Archaeological Site of Kerameikos.

The item was transferred for safekeeping and maintenance to the nearby Archeological Museum of Vravrona.

The excavation is continuing and other fragments are likely to be found.
