The Greece-China Year of Culture and Tourism will begin in May 2021.

On Wednesday, Greece's Culture and Sports Minister Lina Mendoni met with Chinese Ambassador to Greece Zhang Qiyue.

They discussed the program of events and initiatives that will run from May 2021 until May 2022, which aim to strengthen relations between the two countries.

At the opening event, statues of Socrates and Confucius will be unveiled at the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora, near the Acropolis.

The sculpture “Socrates and Confucius: A Meeting” is the creation of Wu Weishan, renowned sculptor and president of the People’s Artists Association of China. He is donating the artwork.

For the installation of the sculpture, technicians from China will travel to Greece, who will work with a team from the Ministry of Culture.

Events include the exchange of exhibitions, performances and online concerts with the joint participation of Greek and Chinese musicians.

Particularly important, however, is the cooperation between the two countries on issues related to cultural heritage.

Mendoni and Qiyue discussed ways to address illicit trafficking of antiquities, promote archaeological research, organise archaeological and contemporary art exhibitions and digitalising cultural heritage.
